NIRVANA Highest goal for human beings who seek to end the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. To achieve it, one must understand the Four Noble Truths and follow the Middle Way. To lead a good life, and progress to Nirvana, Buddha urged people to follow the Eightfold Nobel Path. Unit 6 Lesson 9
13
EIGHTFOLD NOBLE PATH Right understanding: Seeking knowledge and truth
Right effort: Trying to resist evil. Right speech: Saying nothing untrue or hurtful about others. Right Action: Acting virtuously. Right livelihood: Doing work that does not harm others (even animals.) Right mindfulness: Striving to have no evil thoughts. Right thought: Controlling feelings and ideas Right concentration: Training thoughts through meditation. Unit 6 Lesson 9
14
THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS 1. Life is suffering. 2. Suffering is caused by our desires and greed. All life is a great wheel of suffering. Suffering can be mental or physical. The cause of suffering is selfishness and greed. People want more and more and they are never satisfied. 3. There can be an end to suffering and desires. 4. There is a path to Nirvana. End unhappiness by ending greed and selfishness. With no desire for worldly things, you end the cycle or rebirth and the suffering that comes from it. The way to the end of suffering is the Eightfold Noble Path and following the Middle Way.
15
WHAT IS THE MIDDLE WAY? This, Buddha said, is the path to Nirvana.
It is the path of living between two extremes. This means that people should not desire great pleasures, such as strong drink, rich foods, or great luxury. At the same time, they should not impose great hardships on themselves, such as fasting or other forms of self denial This, Buddha said, is the path to Nirvana. Unit 6 Lesson 9
16
OPPOSING VIEWS OF BUDDHA
After Buddha’s death, his teachings were spread through writings. Two different views emerged. The Buddha was a good man, and taught others how to live a life free of suffering. 2. The Buddha was a god ,who came to earth to teach people about pain and suffering. You should pray to him for help. Many people use statues of the Buddha to focus their prayer and meditation.
