What happened? On December 7, 1941, the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by Japanese forces. This was a surprise attack that resulted in the death of Japanese suicide pilots and 2,403 Americans. approximately one thousand Americans were wounded

Why did the Japanese attack the United States?

- placed an embargo on exports to Japan (steel and aviation fuel) - “froze Japan’s assets” (they could not buy oil) - demanded that Japan withdraw from China official ban on trade

The Japanese came up with a plan that would give them the two things they wanted most: oil and land.
They would take Burma, the East Indies, and the Philippines. They would also set up a perimeter to protect their new land. . . . but there was one huge, threatening problem . . .

The US knew that maybe an attack was coming
The US knew that maybe an attack was coming. Japanese code had been cracked in Washington, DC, but the message did not reach Pearl Harbor in time. The planes were spotted by radar, but radar was a new technology. Those reading the signs thought the planes were American.

What were the results? Other than the obvious loss of life and military equipment, there were many other effects of the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were changes in the United States, and around the world. Overall, the events on December 7, 1941 completely changed the stage and the outcome of WWII.

American citizens had wanted to stay out of war until the attack. After the events at Pearl Harbor, they started thinking differently about many things. In the US, there was a fear of Japanese spies, and prejudice toward Japanese-Americans became common. Internment camps were set up..
