Motion Notes Mr. Borushko Science 8
2
Activity Choose and object in the classroom
Write down a description in your notebook of where that object is located. Not what it looks like! Read your description to your classmate and see if he/she can guess what the object is. Try giving directions until your classmate can guess the object.
3
Motion What is motion? When an object changes position over time when compared to a reference point.
4
Motion What is a reference point? +
The object that appears to stay in place that we compare motion to.
5
Motion What is speed? How fast or slow an object is moving
Speed=distance time Units m/s
6
Motion Important equations S=d/t (m/s) d=s x t (m) t=d/s (s)
7
Motion How do we graph speed? Constant speed Distance (m) Time (s)
8
Motion Graphing con’t. Changing speed
9
Motion Graphing con’t. Changing speed-speeding up
10
Motion Graphing con’t. Changing speed-slowing down
11
Motion What is average speed? Average speed= Total distance Total time
12
Read pg. 9-14 Main Idea Details
13
Motion What is velocity? How does velocity change?
Speed in a direction Units m/s Speed up, slow down, change direction
14
Motion What is acceleration? Change in velocity over time
Units m/s/s or m/s2 Acceleration=change in V change in t a=Vf-Vs tf-ts
