How are we doing? Today, around 3 800 cubic kilometres of fresh water is withdrawn annually from the world's lakes, rivers and aquifers. This is twice the volume extracted 50 years ago A 5-minute shower with a standard shower head uses 100 litres of water A single lawn sprinkler spraying 19 litres per minute uses more water in just one hour than a combination of ten toilet flushes, two 5-minute showers, two dishwasher loads, and a full load of clothes

Canada is the largest producer of hydroelectricity, followed by the United States and Brazil
Landfills, leaking gasoline storage tanks, leaking septic tanks, accidental spills and farm land treated with pesticides and fertilizers are a few examples of how we are treating our precious groundwater One drop of oil can render up to 25 litres of water unfit for drinking

Demo: Which would you drink?
Look at the 2 glasses of water – which one would you drink? Do you think that this is pure water? Why or why not? Water is a mixture since there are other substances that are odourless and colourless in it that we cannot see (eg. Floride and sodium). Show glass of water from tap and glass of pond water.
