DO NOW: TURN IN ANY WORKSHEETS YOU HAVE! Start reading through the lab, remember the quicker we start the better lab we will have!
2
Unit: Thermochemistry
Notes Unit: Thermochemistry Thermochemistry Lab
3
After today you will be able to…
Calculate the ΔH of a reaction through laboratory investigation
4
WARNING! These are dangerous chemicals you must be careful! There is no goofing off in lab! Send only one person to the front materials table to gather chemicals! You need goggles and gloves and hair tied back!
5
WARNING! Unless you are obtaining distilled water you will be pipetting the HCl and the NaOH. When cleaning out your graduated cylinder you need to CAREFULLY (water on first!) CLEAN it! You have three separate reactions, you need 3 different cups! They need to be CLEARLY labeled! You are recording the temperature in CELSIUS!!!!
6
WATCH YOUR THERMOMETER FOR TEMPERATURE CHANGES CAREFULLY
REACTION 1: 100 mL distilled water and NaOH pellets (grab the pre-massed NaOH and record the mass in your lab) REACTION 2: 50 mL of 1.0 M HCl and 50 mL 1.0 M NaOH REACTION 3: 100 mL 0.5 HCl and NaOH pellets (grab the pre-massed NaOH and record the mass in your lab)
7
(ΔH for Reaction 1+2) –(ΔH Reaction 3) x 100
POST LAB: Molar Mass of NaOH= g (ΔH for Reaction 1+2) –(ΔH Reaction 3) x 100 (ΔH for Reaction 1+2)
