1 Classification of Matter

2 Classification of Matter
Substances are broken into two groups Pure Substances Mixtures

3 1. Pure Substances Made of only on type of particle
separated into elements and compounds Element – a particle made of only 1 atom Compound – a particle made of 2 or more atoms

4 Elements All elements (the different types of atoms) are listed on the Periodic Table.

5 Pure Substances examples
1. Distilled water- Compound 2. Helium- Element 3. Oxygen- Element 4. Carbon Dioxide- Compound 5. Salt - Compound

6 2. Mixtures A substance made of at least two different types of pure substances Ex. Granola bar or salt water

7 Mechanical Mixture or Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture you can distinguish between different particles i.e. Munchies Chips Ie. Raisin Bran cereal

8 Solutions or Homogeneous Mixtures
A mixture that contains two or more different substances but look uniform i.e. Coca cola Ie. Apple Juice
