1 Patterns,Functions, and Algebra
B. F Yancey Elementary School 4th Grade Dean, Kayla, and Timothy

2 Explanation of Concept
Pattern: repeated designs or repeated sequence. Function: A function is like an input/output machine. When you put a number in a different number comes out because the number that goes in get times and another one comes out. Algebra: The part of math is the relations between known and unknown numbers.

3 Virginia Standards of Learning
The student will recognize, create, and extend numbers and geometric patterns, using concrete materials, number lines, symbols, tables, and words. The student will recognize and demonstrate the meaning of equality, using symbols representing numbers, operations, and relations [e.g., = and 15 + ( ) = ( ) + 16].

4 National Standards NCTM Standards:
Understand patterns, relations, and functions Represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols Use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships Analyze change in various contexts Describe, extend, and make generalizations about geometric and numeric patterns; Represent and analyze patterns and functions, using words, tables, and graphs.

5 Kid Language: The student will…
1. See and stretch out number and shape patterns using lots of different tools. 2. See and show the meaning of equality. Understand patterns, relationships, and functions. Use numbers, symbols, and words to describe relationships, patterns, and functions.

6 Key Words: Equal: is when two sides or things have the same value.
Variable: A symbol like x or y that use in math that stand for a changeable number. Sequence: in the order it connected, related, or dated . Coefficient: The number in front of the variable. It tells you how many of the variable to consider. Ex. 8x means 8 times X

7 Example #1 11,23,47,__ ,__ If the pattern continues what will be the next two numbers? Explain your thinking. What is the rule for the number pattern? How does knowing the rule for the pattern help you to figure out what will come next?

8 Knowing the rule helps you extend the pattern.
Explain the answer The next two numbers are 95 and 191 because, the rule of the pattern is the number times two plus one! (N x 2)+1 Knowing the rule helps you extend the pattern.

9 Example # 2 Look at the function machine below and use it to answer this question. In out If a 17 goes in what would come out? Explain why. What is the rule for the in & out machine? (Write an algebraic expression to answer this.

Thanks for Watching Timmy Dean Kayla From B.F. Yancey Elementary School

11 37 will come out because the rule is
Explain the answer 37 will come out because the rule is (N x 2) +3
