HW # 31 Use the graph, which shows the distance traveled by a car during a 2 hour drive The slope of each line segment gives the car’s speed, which is the rate of change in distance traveled with respect to time. Find the car’s speed during the first hour. (2, 100) y 100 80 60 40 20 (1, 60) (0,0) x Time(hr.) STEP 1) Choose 2 points ( , ) and ( , ) STEP 2) Make a table of points x y STEP 3) Find the difference Find the difference - - STEP 4) Make a fraction with the values from STEP 3. m= = = = denominator numerator 4

The car travels faster in the _______ hour.
HW # 33 Use the graph, which shows the distance traveled by a car during a 2 hour drive During which hour is the car traveling faster? How does the graph show this? (2, 100) y 100 80 60 40 20 The car travels faster in the _______ hour. (1, 60) (0,0) x Time(hr.) The graph shows this because_______ _______________________________ ______________________________. 6

Storm Check (Think, Write, Discuss, Report)
How do you find the slope for a given region of a graph? (3 or 4 sentences) To find the slope for a given region of a graph, I have to ________________________________ ___________________________________________ __________________________________________.

The kiln showed the greatest rate of change between________and_______
HW # 35 Determine the time interval when the temperature in the kiln showed the greatest rate of change. (8.95, 1920) Firing a piece of pottery in a kiln takes place at different temperatures for different amounts of time. The graph shows the temperatures in a kiln while firing a piece of pottery. (after the kiln is preheated to 250⁰F) (4.65, 1680) Temp(F) (2.5, 1300) 1500 1000 500 (1.5, 1000) (0,250) Time(hr.) The kiln showed the greatest rate of change between________and_______ because________________________. 8

The kiln showed the least rate of change between________and_______
HW # 35 Determine the time interval when the temperature in the kiln showed the least rate of change. (8.95, 1920) Firing a piece of pottery in a kiln takes place at different temperatures for different amounts of time. The graph shows the temperatures in a kiln while firing a piece of pottery. (after the kiln is preheated to 250⁰F) (4.65, 1680) Temp(F) (2.5, 1300) 1500 1000 500 (1.5, 1000) (0,250) Time(hr.) The kiln showed the least rate of change between________and_______ because________________________. 9

Which statement about the graph is true?
HW # 38 Determine the time interval when the temperature in the kiln showed the least rate of change. The graph shows the number (in thousands) of undergraduate students who majored in biology, engineering, or liberal arts in the U.S. from 1990 to 2000. Which statement about the graph is true? ─- Engineering ─- Biology ─- Liberal Arts 90 80 70 60 50 40 30 Students (thousands) ‘90 ‘92 ‘94 ‘96 ‘ Year For the period , the major with the greatest rate of change in students was liberal arts. For the period , the major with the least rate of change in students was engineering. For the period , biology had a negative rate of change in students. For the period , liberal arts had a negative rate of change in students. 10

Rate of Change Notes: A Rate of Change compares a change in one quantity to a change in another quantity. SLOPE and RATE of CHANGE You can interpret the slope of a line as a rate of change. When given graphs of real-world data, you can compare rates of change by comparing slopes of lines.
