What is a census?

3 Lesson Objectives TLW understand the importance of census. TLW describe factors that affect population growth. TLW explain the movement of the American people from the country’s early years to the present.

6 Census An official, periodic counting of a population
United states conducts a census every 10 years. When will the next census be conducted? 2020 Census collects demographic information. Demographics: the study of the characteristics oof human populations Example: ethnic background, # of children in each family, how many pets a family owns, and etc.

7 Census Information Determines how many people each state has in the House of Representatives Shows population growth and decline for different areas Reports how many children each family has Helps government, businesses, and individuals plan for the future

12 How do Populations Grow?
Natural increase Birthrate – refers to the annual # of live births per 1,00- members of a population. Death rate - refers to the annual # of deaths per 1,000 members of a country’s population. Adding new territories During the 1800s, the U.S. Gained huge sections of territory from Mexico, including present day Texas and California. People of Native American, Spanish, and mixed heritage who lived on those lands became important to the U.S. Population. Immigration Since 1820, more than 60 million immigrants from all over the world came to the U.S.

14 Changes in the movement of Americans:
The first census found the majority of Americans living on farms and rural areas. 1830—urban areas were growing faster than rural areas 1920—more Americans lived in cities than in rural areas Mid-1900s—suburbs developed around crowded cities Today there are more people living in suburbs than in cities. Migration to the Sunbelt increased during the 1980s–1990s.

Migration - a movement of large numbers of people from region to region, to the cities. 1950s people started moving from colder places to warmer southern states called the SUNBELT due to its milder climate and lots of sunshine SUNBELT includes states from North Carolina and Florida in the eat to southern California in the west.

16 Section 3 assessment Why is the census important to the nation?
What are three ways in which a country may grow in population? What are four ways in which the American population is changing? If better jobs and opportunities arose in the Northeast and Midwest, what changes in demographics might occur. Define census, demographics, birthrate, death rate, and migration.
