9 Louis XIV The government, which was headed by the extravagant King Louis XIV (14th), cared little and did almost nothing to develop the economy of France. As a result, Paris and France lacked decent roads, canals and other means of communications and travel or infrastructure that would have helped everyone.

11 Louis XIV (14th) ruled France for over 70 years started at the age of 7 and gave himself the nickname “The Sun King”. Louis did little for his country and was a largely ineffective ruler who preferred to live a life of luxury and excess.

17 Marie Antoinette was the Austrian bride of Louis XVI
(Louis’ XIV successor) and was a very unpopular Queen. Marie was strong willed and opinionated, but had no education or experiences on which to base her judgments. The result was often decisions that affected government and the people of France in a negative way.

18 The Enlightenment The 18th C was a period in history where people questioned the natural world around them, their religious beliefs and how their society was organized These new ideas were thought to be “enlightened”  science and human intelligence were of the highest importance The intellectuals who led the way with this type of questioning and thinking were sometimes referred to as “Philosophes” or philosophers.

19 Philosophes Women held salons (meetings with other intellectuals) where they exchanged ideas about society, religion and government Most philosophes were economically privileged and were able to spend time in cafes reading and discussing ideas

20 French philosophers were influenced by the movements towards democracy in Britain and the United States as well as by the English intellectuals like Isaac Newton (law of gravity) and John Locke
