The Black Legend The conquests were brutal- thereby creating a myth of Spanish cruelty “Black Legend” 1550 Charles V brought together people to discuss this issue (note that he is also King Charles I of Spain)

Black Legend Just war? Were the Natives barbaric, as suggested by Charles: “indigenous populations were savage and barbarous and inhuman people with no god and no laws and it was natural that advanced societies should rule over lesser ones”
