Era of Good Feelings – a period of national pride and political unity following the end of the War of 1812 and the Federalist Party
Pres. Monroe was concerned about European nations resuming their efforts to colonize the Western Hemisphere.
1823 – Monroe Doctrine
The United States would not become involved in the internal affairs of European countries, nor would it take sides in wars among them.
The United States recognized the existing colonies and states in the Western Hemisphere and would not interfere with them
The US would not permit any further colonization of the Western Hemisphere
Any attempt by a European power to take control of any nation in the W.H. would be viewed as a hostile action toward the US
