1 Why did the British become Empire Builders?
POLITICS: Stopping other European countries developing their Empires and becoming too powerful. TRADE: Making money for British Companies. RELIGION: Trying to spread the Christian faith. Why did the British become Empire Builders? LAND: Hoping to settle down and start a new life in a new land. AMBITION: Hoping to get rich easily or get a good job in the Government of the Empire. ADVENTURE: Wanting to learn about new lands and peoples.

2 THE BRITISH EMPIRE At its height it was the largest Empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1922, the British Empire held sway over a population of about 458 million people, one-quarter of the world's population.

3 THE BRITISH EMPIRE MAP WORK
TASK: Using your outline map, colour in the colonies owned by the British Empire at some point in History. (Red is the colour of the Empire traditionally). You MUST label: Canada, India, Australia, New Zealand, India, Burma, the Caribbean Islands, South Africa, Egypt, Sudan, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Falkland Islands. If you wish to label other countries that you know, you may do so.

4 LEARNING TO LEARN PROJECT
For the next three weeks your homework will be an individual research project on any country that was part of the British Empire. (Due Tues 13th Oct) Today we will look at the example of Australia (so you can’t research that for your project) You need to use a variety of books and websites for your research but you can present it any way you choose (e.g. power point; newspaper reports; essay; diaries etc…..) You must answer: 1. Who discovered your country? 2. Why was your country colonised by the British? 3. How it was run under British control. 4. How it became an independent country? 5. What Legacy was left by the British? (Can be both positive and negative)

5 AUSTRALIA TASK: Read through the worksheets about Australia and discuss the questions below. In pairs design a poster for Year 7 to explain in words and diagrams: Who really discovered Australia? 2. Why was Australia colonised by the British? 3. How was the country run under British control? 4. How did it became an independent country? 5. What Legacy was left by the British? (Can be both positive and negative)
