1 Levels of Organization

2 Biosphere The part of earth in which all life exists including biotic and abiotic factors Biotic factors: All the living organisms. Abiotic factors: soil, water, temperature, elevation, and location on the earth. (non-living)

3 Biome A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant plant and animal communities Video

4 Ecosystem Collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with their non-living environment Examples of ecosystems: forest, pond, lake, grassland, and mountain.

5 Community Assemblage of all the organisms that live together in a defined area Only consists of the biotic factors that interact between different species

6 Population Group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area

7 Species (individual) Group of same organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring… doesn’t matter where they are…. Individual is just one organism

8

9 Individual Organism Individual living thing
You and I are considered individual organisms. Can you give me some more examples? VIDEO All living beings are organisms because the possess some higher level of organization. They are called individuals because each organism has a distinct interaction or interact individually.

10 Organ Systems Groups of organs that work together to perform a specific function Examples Nervous System Circulatory System Respiratory System Etc….

11 Organs Group of tissues that work together to perform closely related functions Examples -Heart -Brain -Lungs When two or more tissues are organized into distinct structures called organs. Organs are specialized to perform one or more functions. Pump blood out of heart, photosynthesis in leaves.

12 Tissues Groups of similar cells that perform a particular function
Examples Cardiac Tissue Skeletal Tissue Skin Tissue Group of cells with similar structure performing the same function. There are four basic tissues in the human body. Epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous.

13 Cells All tissues are made up of a group of specialized cells
These cells perform a SPECIFIC function and therefore work together in tissues. The smallest functional unit of life. Two Kinds of cells Prokaryote (single cell bacteria) Eukaryote (Plant and Animal)

14 Compounds/Molecules Cells are composed of many chemical compounds-Two or more elements interacting Ex) C6H12O6—Glucose The smallest group of atoms held together by chemical bonds with a compounds characteristics is a molecule Ex) H2O – is ONE molecule of the compound water Eatoms combine together to form molecules, examples: water H2O, sodium chloride NaCl table salt, glucose, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids also known as macromolecules or bimolecules.

15 Elements Made of molecules interacting together
Elements are found on the periodic table The elements Carbon (C), Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N), and Hydrogen (H) make up 96% of all living things

16 Finally the Atom The SMALLEST particle of an element that has the characteristics of that element Can only be seen using an electron microscope! The basic unit or component of organization in both living and non-living objects is an atom. An atom is, made of smaller particles called electrons, protons and neutrons.

17 Levels of Organization
Biosphere Biome Ecosystem Community Population Organism Organ System Organ Tissue Cell Compound Molecule Element Atom

18 Organize your organism
Give an example of each. Create a foldable
