Homework: Study for Chapter 4 Test (complete optional study guide) Warm UP: Quietly look at the Warm UP Review in front of you. Cross out “Chapter 3” and write “Chapter 4”. By “Score”, cross out “/6” and put “/12”. Do not do the sheet yet, just take a good look at it QUIETLY and read all the questions and statements. Now we are going to watch 2 Brain POP videos and you can answer the questions as we watch the videos. You will also have 2 additional minutes to answer any remaining questions after the videos. PLEASE BE QUIET SO YOU DON’T MISS ANYTHING WHEN WE BEGIN.

Goal for Today SWBAT determine factors that affect plant growth and identify associated vocabulary.
4
What factors effect plant growth?
Turn to your SHOULDER PARTNER and discuss this for 30 seconds DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) Tells a plant how to grow and under what conditions to grow The environment Hand-in-hand with DNA, a plant will not grow if the ambient (outside/exterior) conditions are not correct
5
Growth Hormone - All living things produce some type of growth hormone that tells the organism when to grow more or less at different stages and in response to different things – for example newly germinated plants and teenage humans produce lots of growth hormone, telling them to grow more quickly at that stage of their lives. Tropism - Ways that plants change their direction of growth in response to the environment - 3 Types
6
3 Types of Tropism Gravitropism Phototropism
Roots grow downward, with the pull of gravity. Stems grow upward, against the pull of gravity Phototropism In response to light, a plant’s stem or leaves or BOTH will grow towards the light. Stems can bend if one portion of a stem grows BIGGER or FASTER.
7
3 Types of Tropism…continued
Thigmotropism The way a plant grows in response to touching another object. Stems of vines will often wrap around objects for support Roots will often avoid rocks or hard soil (if they can)
8
Closing it up…. In your science textbook, write one factor that effects plant growth and tell me HOW it effects plant growth. Show me and you can go.
