Do male nurses receive more patient violence then female nurses?
Issue What is abuse? Research Male nurses are more likely to be assigned abusive patients than female nurses (Crawford, 2009). Quantitative Study done on all nurses in Butterworth hospital and whether they receive abusive patients or not Review of incident reports containing a nurse being abused by a patient and what kind of abuse over the past 3 years A survey will be given to male/female nurses including: - how often they receive an “abusive patient” - Is it a choice to take the abusive patient or are they assigned to them - How many times they have been abused by a patient physically or verbally - what they believe caused the abuse Improper treatment of a person Can be: physical or verbal abuse Limitations Importance to Nursing Small population of male nurses compared to female nurses Unreported abuse Lack of honesty in survey Abuse is subjective Lack of abusive patients on certain floors Research is needed to see if male nurses are assigned more abusive patients than female nurses and why Research could help male nurses understand why they may be abused and how to fix it Assure equality between male and female nurses Crawford, T.
