2 Day 1 – No School Nowak Geometry Week 17

3 Day 2 – Intro to Probability
Nowak Geometry Week 17

4 #83 Do Now (Week 17 Day 2) PROBABILITY
Brainstorm: What do you think of when you read the word below? Make a list of at least 5 different ideas (words, phrases, examples, pictures) PROBABILITY

5 #84 Mini Games

6 #84 Mini Games Player 1 (4 or less) Player 2 (more than 4)
FACE OFF Player 1 (4 or less) Player 2 (more than 4) DOUBLES FACE OFF – 7 is a reroll Player 1 (6 or less) Player 2 (8 or more)

7 SKUNK A game of choice & Chance
There are 5 rounds (S,K,U,N,K) of this game. Everyone starts each round standing up. Ms. Nowak will roll two dice. Anyone who is standing will earn the points from that pair of dice. HOWEVER, if the roll contains a “1” in it, you will lose ALL your points from this round, and the round is over. If a roll ever has two 1’s (snake eyes), then you lose ALL points from ALL ROUNDS YOU’VE PLAYED You may sit down at any time during the round & total up your points. Once you’ve sat down, you cannot stand back up again until the next round. Remember: If you are sitting, you are safe, but can’t earn any more points. If you are standing, you’re at risk, but can earn more points. Ones cause you to lose points!

15 #85 Do Now (Week 17 Day 3) 1. 2. Multiply the following fractions: 1 2 x 6 10

16 Your Tasks: p. 234 [Quick Check]

17 4-53: It’s In The Genes Can you roll your tongue?
Can you bend your thumb?

18 #86

20 Quick Check: 4-53 and 4-54 Rolling Tongue: 7/10 Yes, 3/10 No
Bending Thumb: 1/4 Yes, 3/4 No

21

22 4-55 and 4-56 4-55 has you examine just 2 blood types SHIPWRECKED! Using real US population statistics, what is the likelihood any 2 strangers could donate blood to another?

23 4-55 & 4-56: Blood Types

24 4-55 & 4-56: Blood Types

25 4-55 & 4-56: Blood Types 20.25% + 16% + 1.21% + 0.16% ≈ 37.62%
20.25% + 16% + 1.21% + 0.16% ≈ 37.62% 37.62% + 18% + 4.95% + 1.8% + 1.6% + 0.44%  ≈ 64.41%

26 4-57 You made a critical assumption in problem 4-56 when you made a probability area model and multiplied the probabilities. Blood type is affected by genetic inheritance. What if Zack and Nick were related to each other?  What if they were brothers or father and son?  How could that affect the possible outcomes?  What has to be true in order to assume a probability area model will give an accurate theoretical probability?
