Naming Compounds When 2 different elements combine the name usually ends in –ide. The first element (usually a metal) keeps its element name. When 2 identical elements combine the name doesn’t change at all. When 3 or more different elements combine, and 1 of them is oxygen, then the ending will be –ate.

O2 – Oxygen CuSO4 – Copper Sulfate CaCO3 – Calcium Carbonate KNO3 – Potassium Nitrate NaHCO3 – Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate

Compound Ions -OH – Hydroxide -CN – Cyanide NH4 – Ammonium
-HCO3 – Hydrogen Carbonate -CO3 – Carbonate -SO4 – Sulfate NO3 - Nitrate
