1 Learning Objective Describe the oxidation and reduction of metals
To be able to: Describe the oxidation and reduction of metals Key Words: Oxygen, reduction, oxidation

2 Exam question Wednesday, 22 May 2019 REDOX Reactions
Date and title in books. You need a pen, pencil & ruler. Starter Activity – 5 minutes Exam question

3 Explain oxidation in terms of the loss and gain of electrons
Target 9-1 State that oxidation is gain of oxygen and reduction is loss of oxygen (F/H) Target 4-9 Write word equations for oxidation and reduction reactions of metals (H) Target 5-9 Explain oxidation in terms of the loss and gain of electrons Extension: Application of Knowledge Target 8/9 Write a balanced symbol equation for the reduction of metal oxides and the oxidation of metals Learning Outcomes

4 Redox Reactions A redox reaction refers to the gain or loss of oxygen.
Oxidation is the gain of oxygen Reduction is the loss of oxygen

5 Reactivity Series How well a metal oxidises or reduces is related to its reactivity. The more reactive, the more likely it is to oxidise or reduce. Question: What might we use to find out about reactivity?

6 Which metal is more likely to oxidise or reduce?
The Reactivity Series How reactive the metal it determines how easy it is to oxidise or reduce. potassium Increasing reactivity sodium calcium magnesium aluminium (carbon) zinc Which metal is more likely to oxidise or reduce? Potassium or Magnesium? iron lead copper silver gold

7 Zinc + oxygen  Zinc oxide
Oxidation Oxidation is the GAIN of oxygen. Example: Zinc + oxygen  Zinc oxide 2Zn + O2  2ZnO

8 Iron Oxide  Iron + Oxygen
Reduction Reduction is the LOSS of oxygen For example; iron oxide can be reduced: Iron Oxide  Iron + Oxygen 2FeO  2Fe + O2

9 Activity 1 Complete the sheet.
Are the equations showing oxidisation or reduction? Can you spot a pattern?

10 Activity 2 Complete the REDOX equations sheet.
As you go further down they get harder and move towards the higher paper questions……

11 Electrons OILRIG Oxidation Is the Loss of electrons
Reduction Is the Gain of electrons
