Elements of Culture: What are Values?
Values are a culture’s standard for what is good and just in society. Examples? Punctual Honest Generous, etc. What about Beliefs? Beliefs are convictions that people hold to be true. For example, we believe in the American Dream, which says that no matter who you are, if you work hard and are determined, you can be successful. Is this still true? Some would argue no: VID Is the American Dream alive, or dead?

Importance of Values Values shape lots of things; they tell us what is good / bad, sough or avoided, beautiful and ugly. Values may reflect how people should behave, but they are not always reflective of how people actually behave. Values represent what would be ideal culture, whereas what is really going on is what is called real culture. An ideal American culture would have no murders, stealing, accidents, etc. What is real culture like? It is full of issues, which as teachers, police, politicians, etc., we are trying to make more ideal, but we always come short.
