1. Two Cell Types
With the invention of microscopes and cells, scientists saw that there were two broad groups of cells.

2. Prokaryotes PROKARYOTES Cells lacking membrane bound organelles
Most Cell functions occur in the cytoplasm
Has free DNA, no nucleus
Has Pili and Flagella for cell movement (locomotion)
Has a Plasma Membrane and Cell Wall
Contain free Ribosomes
Example: Bacteria

3. Eukaryotes EUKARYOTES Cells with membrane bound organelles
Each organelle has a certain function / “job” in the cell for cell survival
Allows for separation of chemical reactions that could not occur simply in the cytoplasm
The nucleus controls cell function (Virchow – Cell Structure, Cell Division)
Example: Animal and Plant Cells
NOTE: Algae and Yeast are eukaryotes and are unicellular
