Most men provided financial support There started to become a greater sense of equality in relationships New Family Roles

7 Effects of urbanization
Farms did poorly after the war Some sought jobs in the city 1920 census showed that more Americans lived in urban areas than in rural areas Cars allowed those who still lived on farms to visit the city more often 1920’s- laws were passed that required kids to go to school Effects of urbanization

8 Rural America represented traditional spirit-hard working, self-reliant, religious, independent
Cities represented changes that threatened those values Conflicts over Values

9 Ku Klux Klan Ku Klux Klan grew dramatically in 1920’s
They drew members from rural areas Farmers, workers, small business owners They thought the Klan could help preserve their place in society Klan declined in late 1920’s due to scandals Ku Klux Klan

Uncertainty of the times caused people to turn to religion Bill Sunday became a powerful preacher Believed in literal interpretation of the Bible Rise of fundamentalism

Ideas of evolution-people change over generations Fundamentalists believed that this went against the biblical account of how God created humans Several states created laws outlawing the teaching of Darwin’s ideas Evolution

12 Opponents of the law persuaded a science teacher named John Scopes to violate the law and get arrested Trial took place in Dayton, TN Clarence Darrow represented Scopes William Jennings Bryan was the prosecutor Scopes was found guilty and fined $100 Bryan died 5 days after the trial Scopes Trial

Bootleggers were smugglers who brought alcohol in their boots Government in admitted to only stopping 5% of alcohol entering illegally Prohibition

He used alcohol trade to earn over $10 million There were only 3,000 prohibition agents They couldn’t keep up with the criminals Prohibition and crime
