AEAs on MLK speech

Organization As we discussed in class, each speech should have had its own body paragraph. This is logical and easier to do!

Evidence You may never say “King states . . .”
You must give the context before you give the evidence. This makes your writing sound more mature. Instead, do something like this: “When MLK speaks about the rights that African Americans are not able to have, he explain, “We can never be satisified . . “

Analysis errors: The phrases “manacles of segregation” and “chains of discrimination” are metaphors. This should be expanded upon! Think about why King would chose to convey his message with these metaphors? With a partner, complete two or three sentences continuing this analysis . ..

Symbolism King symbolizes all African Americans with his saying “the Negro” This is not a symbol What is a symbol? Do not make this mistake again!

Diction You may only discuss one word!
If you want to talk about a phrase, say that! The clause “I have a dream” is repeated throughout the speech to remind the audience how much this dream is on King’s mind.

Lit features Should NEVER,EVER be used if you cannot use them to prove your assertion Should never sound forced

Above all You must start looking at writing as an author would.
Why would he or she choose a certain word? Why would he or she phrase a sentence in a certain order? Why use a metaphor?

Consider the following:
“Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.” Analyze! Why use the extended metaphor soil/rock throughout this sentence? Why compare racial injustice to quicksand? Why compare brotherhood to solid rock? Why use the verb “to lift”? Why put the word “Now” first? Why use the personal pronoun “our”? (He could of used “the”) Now, with a partner, write a short analysis of this quote. We will share in 6 minutes.
