1 Journal #13: Definition by negation

2 If given a topic, we can usually describe which characteristics it has, but is it equally effective to describe which characteristics it doesn’t have? Let’s practice with “teenagers” as our topic. What characterizes a teenager? Which characteristics does a teenager NOT have? Now you try it with the term “parents.” What is the effect if you’re only given the “have nots”?

3 In your journal, write the final definition strategy:
To define by negation means explaining what something is by showing what it is not. It provides a negative concept; it also does not provide you with a good example of the concept. Using negation helps to contrast your definition with others’ definitions. Examples of negation should answer the question: what is/are ___________ not?

4 What is the American dream?
What does the American dream mean to you? Read “warrior’s” editorial “not the American dream.” What is the author’s definition of the American dream? identify five examples of definition by negation – Write # in text. Explain how the negation in each # adds to your understanding of the authors’ definition of the American dream. Write an argumentative thesis statement about the meaning of the American dream. (AVOID “TO BE” VERBS!)
