Prelude: Economic System
In the early 1800’s Russia’s economy was fueled by agriculture Agriculture was based on serfdom There were approximately 40 million serfs Bound to the land, they could be sold, forced to work in factories, (they received no pay) and they were brutally inefficient Prelude: Economic System

Government The Russian Empire was an Autocracy Problems:
Autocracy: ruler had unquestioned and unlimited power Problems: The size of the empire made ruling difficult Government

Many people wanted change, but the Czars did everything to strengthen their power
Employed secret police which had unlimited power to quell unrest Unrest

Change Over time some of the Czars realized some change was needed
Emancipation Edict freed the serfs Jury system introduced Schools and health care improved Did not please everyone Change

Ethnic Groups: Russification
Due to Russia’s vast size, there were many different ethnic groups Ukrainians, Finns, Poles, Jews Russification was introduced Force people to use the Russian language and adopt the Russian Orthodox religion Pogroms Murderous raids on Jewish communities Many fled Russia Ethnic Groups: Russification

Industrialization: 100 years too late
During the early 1900’s Russia did begin to industrialize Workers were mistreated just like other nations More changes were sought Constitutional government was wanted States what a ruler can and cannot do Industrialization: 100 years too late

In 1904 Russia went to war with Japan over Imperialism and a warm water port on the Pacific
They lose and more demands are made by the people for different government War!!! With Japan

January 22, 1905 Workers march to bring a petition to Nicolas II Wanted fairer wages, safer working conditions, and a reduction of the workday to 8 hours Gunned down as they approached Czars winter palace 1000 dead or wounded from shots and trampling Bloody Sunday

Lead to many more strikes and riots These small revolutions would lead to ones later on Including the 1917 Revolution where Vladimir Lenin takes power, kills the Czar and his family and creates: The United Soviet Socialist Republic Bloody Sunday: Results
