Demonstrating transpiration
Colored Carnations

Question How much water should be put on a plant when it is watered? Does it matter where the plant is kept? What environmental factors influence the amount of water passing through a plant?

review Last week we learned the process of water vapor loss (by evaporation) from a plant (mostly through the leaves) is called transpiration. This means that the water in the soil moves through the plant and back into our environment. Toxins in our water cycles through our environment.

hypothesis Use your knowledge to create a hypothesis: If the carnation is placed in the ___(mv)____________ then the transpiration will _____(dv)___ because ________________________. MV is what you want to manipulate. In this case we are choosing either light or dark situation. DV is what you want to measure. For all of us it is the rate of transpiration – which we will measure by how far up the dye has traveled in the carnation in a 24-hour period.

procedure Collect the appropriate glassware (you are choosing from the materials in the back of the room) and put your group number – period number (group 4 period 1 would be 4-1) Add 5 drops of food coloring to the water (this is so we can monitor the flow of water through the carnation). Collect your carnation from Mrs Whitney – she will cut the stem for you. Immediately place your carnation into the colored water and use the cotton balls to stuff around the edge to hold the carnation in place and prevent water evaporation. Place your carnation into the appropriate bin (light or dark).

Data Use a ruler to measure the cm that the colored water has flow up into the carnation stem after 24 hours. Create the data table and fill in the information

Data Table MV RV Control 1 Control 2

Conclusion The plants that were in the dark averaged _____ cm water transpiration, wile the plants that were in the light averaged _____ cm water transpiration.

My hypothesis was _____ by the data.
Analysis My hypothesis was _____ by the data.
