When do you use it?
When you must solve more than one equation, or more than one problem within a problem.
How do you use it?
Break the problem into parts or steps.
Then, solve one part or step at a time.
Finally, make sure you have answered all parts.

When do you use it?
When you are asked to solve a problem with large numbers or many items.
How do you use it?
Reduce the large numbers to smaller numbers, or reduce the number of items given.

Linda needs to buy horseshoes for 20 horses. Each horse needs 4 horseshoes. How many horseshoes does Linda need to buy?
The point here is to show the student that the numbers can be made into 2 X 4 = 8 and then add the 0 in to get 80 horseshoes.

Frank starts his math homework at twenty minutes past three. It takes him 57 minutes to complete the homework. At what time does Frank finish his math homework?
The attempt here if for the student to make the problem simpler by solving for 60 minutes and then coming back 3 minutes.
