Chapter 4: Factors, Fractions, and Exponents
Section 4.1: Divisibility and Factors
3
Divisibility One integer is divisible by another if the remainder is 0. For example: 18 ÷ 3 = 6 with a remainder of 0.
4
Divisibility An integer is divisible by: 2: If it ends with an even number! 5: If it ends in 5 or 0!! 10: If it ends in 0!!! Easy????
5
Practice Is the first number divisible by the second? 567 by 2? 1015 by 5? 111,120 by 10? No Yes Yes
6
You Try!!! Is the first number divisible by the second? 368 by 2? 1010 by 5? 111,125 by 10? Yes Yes No
7
Divisibility An integer is divisible by: 3: If the sum of the digits is divisible by 3! Ex: Is 27 divisible by 3? 2+7=9 9 is divisible by 3, then so is 27! 9: If the sum of the digits is divisible by 9!! Ex: Is 36 divisible by 9? 3+6=9 9 is divisible by 9, then so is 36!!

Practice Is the first number divisible by the second? 567 by 3? 1015 by 3? 111,123 by 9? 2,153 by 9? 5+6+7=18 18 is divisible by 3. Yes! =7 7 is not divisible by 3. No! =9 9 is divisible by 9. Yes! =11 11 is not divisible by 3. No!
9
Factors What are the factors of 20? 1 x 20 2 x 10 4 x 5 So therefore the factors of 20 are: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20!!!
10
Factors – You Try!! What are the factors of 18? 1 x 18 2 x 9 3 x 6 So therefore the factors of 18 are: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18!!!
