To Start: 15 Points Is the first number divisible by the second? 142,681 by 3 423,675 by 9 5,658,451 by 3 No Yes No
2
Chapter 4: Factors, Fractions, and Exponents
Section 4.2: Exponents
3
Exponents You can use exponents to show repeated multiplication. For example: 26 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 64!!!
4
Powers A power has two parts, a base and an exponent. The expression 26 is read as “two to the sixth power”.
5
Powers Power Verbal Expression Value 121 Twelve to the first power 12
62 Six to the second power 6(6) = 36 (.2)3 Two tenths to the third power (.2)(.2)(.2) = .008 -74 The opposite of seven to the fourth power -(7x7x7x7) = -2,401 (-8)5 Negative eight to the fifth power (-8)(-8)(-8)(-8)(-8)=-32,768
6
Exponents Write using exponents: (-5)(-5)(-5) (-5)3 -2(a)(b)(a)(a) -2a3b
7
Exponents – You Try!! Write using exponents: (6)(6)(6) (6)3 4(x)(x)(y)(x)(y) 4x3y2
8
Exponents Simplify: (7)3 =(7)(7)(7) = 343!! 114 = (11)(11)(11)(11) = 14,641!!!
9
Exponents – You Try!! Simplify: (-4)6 =(-4)(-4)(-4)(-4)(-4)(-4) = 4,096!! -84 = -(8)(8)(8)(8) = -4,096!!!
10
Order of Operations Work inside grouping symbols
Simplify any terms with exponents Multiply and divide from left to right Add and subtract from left to right
11
Practice Simplify: 4(3+2)2 4(5)2 4(25) 100!!!
12
Practice Evaluate: -2x3 + 4y, for x=-2 and y=3 -2(-2)3 + 4(3) -2(-8) !!!
13
Practice – You Try!!! Simplify: 2(5)2 + 4(-3)3 2(25) + 4(-27) !!!
14
Practice Evaluate: 3(a)2 + 6, for a=-5 3(-5) (25) !!!
