6 Napoleon and Nationalism
During the French Revolution, the French people decided that they were the nation, not the king. Believed in democratic ideals, equality before the law, and a representative form of government Revolutionary motto: “Liberty, fraternity (i.e., nationalism), and equality” Napoleon restored order to France = National Pride Reformed Church-State Relations Economic Reforms (Bank of France) Legal and Education Reforms Napoleon built a cult of personality around himself so the French would identify Napoleon with France and be loyal to him and the country.

Napoleon’s policies strengthened France and allowed it to dominate most of Europe = France proud of their success

As Napoleon marched his armies through Europe, the people in these countries learned about the revolutionary ideas of equality and liberty. New ideas of Nationalism The conquered peoples became united in their hatred of the invaders (Saw France as Oppressors) Saw the power and strength of national feeling Nationalism becomes an important factor in Napoleon’s defeat.

Answer – The French helped spread nationalism because they were hated as oppressors and they showed what a united nation in arms could do. Opinion: How can nationalism be a good thing? How can nationalism be a bad thing?

Describe what the Congress of Vienna was. Analyze how the Congress of Vienna repressed nationalism? Evaluate the affect the Congress of Vienna had on Europe. SHARE WHAT YOU FOUND… Weren’t giving people a choice on who their leaders should be. The status quo and stability was deemed more important than democracy, so the crowned heads of Europe made sure that any nationalist uprisings would be crushed.

16 Background Info/ Napoleon’s Defeat
Nationalism caused nations to rise up against the French armies and Napoleon. In 1812, Napoleon launched a disastrous attack on Russia. Other enemies (Prussia, Austria, Great Britain) allied themselves against France. Napoleon is defeated at the Battle of Waterloo and is exiled bringing an end to the Napoleonic Wars. Nationalism (loyalty to their own nations and people above all else

Congress: an assembly/conference What & Why: A series of international meetings to secure order, stability, and peace to Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. Who: Diplomats from Prussia, Russia, Great Britain, Austria, and France Leader: Prince Klemens von Metternich of Austria Metternich had a strong distrust of democracy

Redrew the map of Europe Moved France’s boundaries back to where they had been in 1792 Changed many national borders to made countries around France stronger Plan to weaken France and to provide a balance of power across Europe Distributed France’s conquered territories Wanted to compensate Allies for their lost territories Restored old monarchies Thought this would bring stability back to Europe Wanted to eliminate all traces of revolution Restored Louis XVIII (brother to the executed King Louis XVI) to the French throne Citizens’ rights were again restricted under the monarchs Redrew map, Didn’t want another revolution to break out Restored monarchies removed by Napoleon and the French revolution Restored monarchies that Napoleon had eliminated Restored the King? Is that going to make the people happy? No. What were they fighting against? Wanted more equality and a more democratic government.

Answer- The main goal of the Congress of Vienna was to secure peace and stability across Europe. What did the Congress of Vienna achieve? Answer – The Congress of Vienna redrew the map of Europe, distributed France’s conquered territories, and restored monarchs to power.

Principal of Intervention – countries had a right to intervene where revolutions were threatening monarchies Austria, France, Prussia, and Russia used military force to crush revolutions in Spain and Italy Nationalism was held back by monarchies & aristocratic rule until the Revolutions of 1848.

Answer: The Concert of Europe was an agreement between Great Britain, Russia, Prussia, and Austria to take action to maintain order, prevent revolutions, and keep monarchs in power. What is the Principle of Intervention? Answer: The Principal of Intervention gave countries the right to intervene where revolutions were threatening monarchies.

25 Wrap Up: How did the Congress of Vienna and Concert of Europe repress nationalism? Answer: The Congress of Vienna and the Concert of Europe repressed nationalism by restoring the European monarchies and preventing revolutions. Stability was deemed more important than democracy. Crowned heads of Europe made sure that any nationalist uprisings would be crushed. Took away the right of the people to decide who their rulers should me.
