Lubrication Systems Chapter 12 Page 149

New Unit 5 Demonstrate general engine service techniques (Engine Repair General). 5.1 Research applicable vehicle and service information, vehicle service history, service precautions, and technical service bulletins. 5.2 Verify operation of the instrument panel engine warning indicators. 5.3 Inspect engine assembly for fuel, oil, coolant, and other leaks; determine necessary action. 5.4 Inspect, replace, and adjust drive belts, tensioners, and pulleys; check pulley and belt alignment. 5.5 Inspect, and test coolant; drain and recover coolant; flush and refill cooling system with recommended coolant; bleed air, as required. 5.6 Perform engine oil and filter change.

Leaks

Oil and It’s Route

Oil Pump & Screen

Lack of Oil Damage

Oil’s Function

Engine Sump

Viscosity

Viscosity Test -35 Celsius
This is after 30 seconds of removing the caps on the jars.

Oil Additives

What’s the Numbers About?
SAE 10W-30 SAE= Society of Automotive Engineers 10= Viscosity measured at 0 degrees W= Winter grade oil 30= viscosity measured at 212 degrees

So what do I choose?

All oil is the same if these numbers are the same.

API Rating API=American Petroleum Institute
Rating progress from SA through SN (s=spark ignition) Diesel engines are rated with a “C” (compression) designation These designations tell us what additive level is in the oil-Government regulated-2011= SN or CJ-4 is mandatory. Changing brand names of oil will not make a difference, As long as the API numbers are the same. Caution with older engines– I will Explain.

Reading what’s in it. As of 2011 SN is the oil needed for those and newer vehicles

Over the years. The The next change will be in early 2018 and will be SP (Skipping SO)

The Oil/Temp Usage Chart

Changing Oil

Changing Oil (Drain)

Changing Oil (Filter)

Changing Oil (Filling)

Changing Oil (Level Check)

Oil Filter Inside Element Non-cartridge/element style Cartridge Style
Spin-on Lube the Seal

Oil Flow

Do not over tighten Getting them off will be challenging

Important Information
Make sure you have the right filter before the job Oil can be hot when draining Check condition of draining oil, feel, smell, etc. Check plug gasket Make sure oil filter gasket comes off with filter Clean up any spills Replace plug Lube filter seal Spin on filter until it stops then an additional ¾ to 1 turn Fill engine, start, verify oil pressure, shut down, check for leaks Finish up job, clean area, oil sticker, etc.

Oil Life Monitoring

Static Sticker A reminder for the customer to come back next time.
Place it high in the upper drivers side windshield (Inside)

Your Job. Complete questions 1-10(review) and ASE style questions Page Write on a separate paper and write out the complete question and your answer. ( do not write the other answer options). Complete the chapter worksheet (I will give it out). You may write on it. File both items in your note book. Notebooks will be graded in the future.
