2 Why do we care? Main idea: Why it matters now:
As the Mughal Empire declined, Britain seized Indian territory until it controlled almost the whole subcontinent. Why it matters now: India, the second most populated nation in the world, has its political roots in this colony.

4 East India Company After the Battle of Plassey (1757), the East India Company was the leading power in India. Company ruled India with little interference from the British gov’t. Company army staffed by Indian soldiers called sepoys.

5 “Jewel in the Crown” British policies called for India to:
Produce raw materials for British manufacturing. Jute Wheat Tea Cotton Hides and skins Buy British finished goods. Over 300 million “customers”

6 Impact of Colonialism Positives Negatives
World’s 3rd largest railroad network Modern roads, telephone/telegraph lines, dams, bridges… Improved sanitation and public health Schools and colleges increased literacy British troops cleared out bandits and ended local warfare between local rulers. British controlled the economy and politics Restricted Indian-owned industries Cash crops reduced food production causing famines Most British officials were racist

7 Sepoy Mutiny 1857 rebellion of Hindu and Muslim soldiers against the British in India. Rumor that the cartridges of their Enfield rifles were sealed with beef and pork fat. Hindus consider the cow sacred and Muslims do not eat pork. The rebellion spread over much of northern India. It took more than a year for EIC to regain control.

8 Raj After the Sepoy Mutiny, the British gov’t. took direct command of India. India was divided into 11 provinces and 250 districts A handful of British officials controlled the million people in a district. London directed policy, a British governor-general in India carried it out. Indian nationalist movement activity?
