LAB SAFETY & W.H.M.I.S.
2
Explain basic lab safety rules
Objectives Explain basic lab safety rules Understand the different types of safety rules that need to be followed in the Science Lab Identify the hazards of a substance based on its WHMIS or hazard symbol
3
Why do we need to know about lab safety?
So the lab is safe for you to work in. So the lab is safe for others to work in. So that you are not a danger to yourself or others So that others are not a danger to you!
4
Group Activity (page 9 of your textbook)
What is wrong with this picture? What is unsafe? Why?
5
Did you find them all?
6
THE FIRST RULE OF THE LAB
Always be safe. If you are ever unsure about something, stop and ask your teacher

Workplace Hazardous materials information system
Commonly written as W.H.M.I.S. or just WHMIS. WHMIS was designed so that everyone has access to information about the chemicals they use at school or work. WHMIS requires all chemicals to have a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) that contains information on the chemical’s .... And much, much more! Composition Hazards All names it can go by First aid procedures How to store it How to dispose of it How to transport it Who made it When it was made
8
WHMIS Symbols There are 8 WHMIS symbols that you need to know.
9
WHMIS SYMBOLS A product may not have any WHMIS symbols
Never assume that a chemical is safe, even if there are no WHMIS warnings on it All chemicals are dangerous, even in the right amount. BUT.... A product may also have many WHMIS symbols Think about it. Could a flammable substance be poisonous? Could a dangerously reactive material be corrosive? Could a poisonous material have other toxic effects? The answer to all of the above is YES! The point is ALWAYS CHECK THE LABEL so you know the hazards of the materials you are working with.
10
Safety hazard symbols Safety hazard symbols are commonly seen on household containers Similar to WHMIS but WHMIS is for school and the work place Hazard symbols provide 2 kinds of warnings: The type of hazard Whether the hazard is the container or the contents
