Intro To Energy

Intro to Energy Energy- the ability to do work
Energy cannot be created or destroyed– only changed from one form into another form (Law of Conservation of Energy) Energy appears in several different forms, we will be focusing on seven: mechanical, sound, chemical, radiant, thermal, electrical, and nuclear

States of Energy Energy has two states: Kinetic and Potential
Kinetic Energy (KE)- energy in motion that is actually doing work (ex: a ball rolling down a hill) Potential Energy (PE)- stored energy that is waiting to work (ex: a rubber band)

Types of Energy Mechanical Energy- energy associated with motion and movement Ex: cars, skateboards, a frog jumping, a moving stream

Types of Energy Sound Energy-is produced when an object is made to vibrate. 1. Sound energy travels out as waves in all directions. 2. Sound needs a medium to travel through, such as air, water, wood, and even metal Ex: Voices, whistles, horns, and musical instruments.

Types of Energy Chemical Energy- energy stored in the bonds that hold atoms together Ex: striking a match, gasoline combusting to propel cars, digesting food to gain energy, combining vinegar and baking soda to form CO2 gas

Types of Energy Radiant (light) Energy- is a combination of heat and light energy. Radiant energy, like sound energy, travels out in all directions in waves. Ex: A light bulb, the glowing coils on a toaster, the sun, the headlights on cars.

Types of Energy Electrical Energy - Energy produced by electrons moving through a substance is known as electrical energy. 1. We mostly see electric energy in batteries and from the outlets in our homes. Ex: CD players, TVs and video games.

Types of Energy Thermal (heat) Energy- associated with the motion of the particles that make up all matter When the motion of the particles increases, the amount of thermal energy produced also increases Ex: ice cream melting, water boiling away

Types of Energy Nuclear Energy- potential energy stored in the nucleus of atoms -- When a nucleus splits apart, a tremendous amount of energy is released Ex: atomic bombs, nuclear power plants, nuclear submarines, and the sun.

Classwork Fill out the Graphic Organizer and place it as page 3 of your notebook Start working on the Energy Illustrations Worksheet– it will be page 4 of your notebook
