Objective: Understand the structure of an essay by identifying and organizing its parts. Here are some essay parts: * counterclaim * body * introduction * evidence * hook * conclusion * thesis What is the structure of an essay? Essay Parts Subcategories Beginning Directions: Each team gets essay part strip(s). Discuss with your team the most organized place for your stip. Subcategories are things that go inside certain essay parts. Put subcategories next to the essay parts they should go inside. End

Count off Your number is the sentence you’re responsible for. 3. Discuss the order of your sentence with your team. 4. On a sticky note, write: Sentence ____ should be _______. 5. Now, let’s identify what these parts are. 1 Teen suicide is a terrible thing that people have been romanticizing for a long time now. 2 Romeo and Juliet for example, a classic story of two young teenagers who fall in love over night, and due to there great love for each other and some obstacles they commit suicide. 3 One person in particular has enough evidence to prove he is responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s suicides, Friar Laurence. 4 Friar Laurence doesn’t think things through he just does/say things without actually thinking them through all the way. 5 These qualities make Friar Laurence most culpable for the teenage suicides of Romeo and Juliet.    ____ 1. Each group needs: an envelope 5 dry erase markers (1/person) 3. Count off 1-5 in your team. 4. Use your dry erase marker to write on your desktop: 5. Distribute the envelope’s strips like you’re dealing cards. 6. Find the sentences for your part of the essay. 7. Arrange them on your desk so that they show good organization in writing. 8. Read over your Romeo and Juliet essay, including all the work you did to complete it: 4 square planning sheet, rough draft, peer feedback/essay checklist, and final draft. Read the rubric, your PFO score, and any comments. Get out a sheet of paper. Write your objective at the top. Reflect on your essay’s structure and organization by answering: How do you know an essay is structured in an organized way? How does my essay’s structure demonstrate organized thinking? What steps should I take to ensure my FSA essay will demonstrate an organized structure?
