1 ABOUT ME AND THE CLUB I AM A FUN AND LOVING PERSON I LIKE PEOPLE
I HAVE FRIENDS I LIKE FOOD THIS CLUB IS COOL

2 Data Transfer and Cable Crimping
By The Boy Himself

3 What do you know about data and Internet? (2 min)
Introduce yourselves and share your knowledge with people around you! Ex. What it is Internet, how is data represented, and how is it transferred? It is fine if you do not know!

4 What do you need to do in this session?
Ask any questions you have! Answer questions and earn CANDY!

5 What is the internet? Internet is just like the mail system
Has both sender, and receiver However, It does not use letters or envelopes What does it use, then, and how?

6 What does the Internet use to send information?
It uses bits! What is a bit? It is any pair of opposites: What are some other opposites? We typically use 1 meaning on, and 0 meaning off. Because a bit has two states, we call it binary code.

7 Bits are used by the Internet to send information!
What about bytes, and kilobytes? 8 bits=1 byte 1000 bytes = 1 kilobyte (KB) 1000 KB = 1 megabyte (MB) 1000 MB = 1 gigabyte (GB) 1000 GB = 1 terabyte (TB) …. A song typically takes 3-4 megabytes! How much space does an image take?

8 How are all these bits transferred?
Its transferred through three main mediums: Electricity Light Radio Waves

9 ETHERNET CABLE Electricity
When we use electricity to send bits, they are represented as electric signals: Electricity = 1, No electricity = 0 What types of cable uses electricity to send information? ETHERNET CABLE

10 In IT Industry, Ethernet Cable has another name….
Cat cables: CAT 5, CAT 5e, CAT 6 The CAT stands for category and the number specifies which category There are differences for each category: CAT5: 100 mb/s CAT5e: 1000 mb/s CAT6: 1000 mb/s We will be making CAT 5e cables!

11 FIBER OPTIC Light How are 0s and 1s represented using light?
Light patterns. What type of cables use light to send bits? FIBER OPTIC

12 Wireless Wireless uses radio signal to sent bits from place to place.
Machines have to translate from 0s and 1s to radio waves. Wifi and Bluetooth use Radio Waves

13 Questions (earn candy!):
How is data represented on the Internet? How many KB in 1 GB? What are the three ways of transferring bits? Which is the fastest CAT cable?

14 LAB Make your own CAT 5e cable! Attach the cable to the connector.
One person is doing one end, and the other person does the other end.

15 Step 1 Cut into the plastic sheath about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the end of the cut cable.

16 Step 2 Unwind and pair the similar colors.

17 Step 3 Pinch the wires between your fingers and straighten them out as shown. The color order is important to get correct.

18 Step 4 Use scissors to make a straight cut across the 8 wires to shorten them to 1/2 Inch (1.3 cm) from the cut sleeve to the end of the wires.

19 Step 5 WRONG WAY WRONG WAY
Carefully push all 8 unstripped colored wires into the connector. Note the position of the blue plastic sleeve. Also note how the wires go all the way to the end. WRONG WAY WRONG WAY

20 Step 6 CRIMPING THE CABLE ... carefully place the connector into the Ethernet Crimper and cinch down on the handles tightly.

21 Step 7 Make sure to test the cables before installing them.
Get a candy if it passes the test! If your cable does not pass the test, cut off the connector and start over! Practice makes perfect! 
