1 Muscles and Moving

2 Title: Muscles Lesson Objectives - Understand the main functions of muscles - Describe the function of major muscle groups - Explain how antagonistic muscles cause movement

3 Brainstorm in your books what parts of the body are being used…
Calisthenics is a popular type of training that uses a persons body weight and equipment like bard to train muscles The parts of the body the person used most were their arms and upper body The muscles used were 1. Triceps which straighten the arm 2. Biceps which bend the arm 3. Shoulder muscles which raise and lower the arm 4. Abdominal muscles with move the torso and help breathing

4 TASK Not everybody in this classroom can do those exercises. What does this tell us about our muscles and body? This tells us that muscles can get stronger and we can learn to do certain movements You need to practice and train to perform these movements

5 Antagonistic Pairs Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3
Muscles can only pull and can’t push. This means two muscles have to work together at a joint. This is called an antagonistic pair.

6 Task Who can remember the function of mitochondria? How is mitochondria useful for muscles? Muscles work hard so their cells need a lot of energy. Respiration releases energy and occurs in mitochondria. So, will muscle cells contain more or less mitochondria than another type of cell? More

7 TASK Order the sentences to describe the movement of an antagonistic pair The bicep begins to contract and the tricep relaxes lifting the ball The arm is fully bent towards the body The tricep is contracted while the bicep is relaxed and the arm is extended The bicep is fully contracted and the tricep is fully relaxed Muscles can only pull and can’t push. This means two muscles have to work together at a joint. This is called an antagonistic pair

8 TASK Write these steps in your books
The tricep is contracted while the bicep is relaxed and the arm is extended The bicep begins to contract and the tricep relaxes lifting the ball The arm is fully bent towards the body The bicep is fully contracted and the tricep is fully relaxed

9 Thinking Skills Leg bone, leg muscle, fat Odd One Out
Fat is a tissue and not an organ Fat does not allow you to move Muscle is the only one that can contract and relax Bone is hard

10 Amy cannot mover her right lower arm up and down
Thinking Skills Amy cannot mover her right lower arm up and down Consider all possibilities The muscles/biceps or triceps in her right arm are not working She has broken her arm She has dislocated her elbow Her arm is trapped in something

11 EXIT TICKET 4 5 6 Understand the main functions of the skeleton
Identify the main bones in the human skeleton and correctly use the terms 6 Relate the properties of bones to their functions Understand the main functions of the skeleton - Identify the main bones in the human skeleton and correctly use the terms - Relate the properties of bones to their functions

12 Most creative piece of work will have five House Points awarded
HOMEWORK CHALLENGE Most creative piece of work will have five House Points awarded Design a factual poster on muscles and bones
