Order: 1. Students need full piece of paper and one index card
2. Use TV to look up terms Have ‘em write down on top of blank paper (have write conformist / nonconformist largely on index card too 3. Do Q/W Brainstorm on back By answering #3 carefully answer should address all three q’s. (fill up front side of paper 4. Quick Circle or Quick Socratic Seminar Promote a leader and create some norms for it. 5. Label celebs as conformist or nonconformist Put one celeb and at least two reasons on each side of index card (staple to Q/W) 6. Define vocab (handout) from the article “The Sociology of Leopard Man” 7. Complete in short sentences the Prereading 9 questions 8. Explain and practice Active Reading Do two as class then give students to finish on their own

Pick one celebrity that you called a conformist and write his/her name of the front of your card. List reasons you think he/she is a conformist. Then, do the same on the other side of the index card for a celebrity nonconformist from the previous slide.

Prereading & Surveying the text
5min Intro: It is important to set yourself up for success. To do that, you should (all good readers do) preview the text—any text. This will get your brain in the right frame of mind, the right topic. This sets you up for success. Directions: A preview is meant to be quick, so you have five minutes to do the top section. You have 6 minutes to complete the bottom section. 6min Give 4th period more time here and ask for comma FANBOYS

What is Active Reading…
Some call it close reading, some call it annotating the text. Whatever it is called, the act is to tear into a text, consume it and at some point regurgitate what it is you have just read. This is done by asking questions of the author and commenting on the different bits of information and or evidence he/she presents. Use iPad as doc camera and move through first two paragraphs as a class. Then assign them the rest of the article on their own.
