Imagery An author's use of vivid and descriptive language to add depth to his or her work. It appeals to human senses to deepen the reader's understanding of the work. Makes you visualize the scene.

Metaphor Describes a subject by comparing the same as another otherwise unrelated object without using like or as. Metaphor is a type of analogy The snow is a white blanket covering the ground. She was a deer in headlights (today’s reading)

Simile A comparison using like or as She was like…… I read the book as slowly as the turtle walking on land.

Irony Expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. The police station was robbed last night.

Theme A main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work.
You extract it from the characters, action, and setting that make up the story. In other words, you must figure out the theme yourself.
