I= Identify the rhetorical strategy E= give evidence. Quote from the text. Don’t DUMP. L= link your strategy back to the “big idea” in your thesis. In this case, it is Baldwin’s main idea or argument. How does the device you selected further his argument? How does it help to make his point? Use VERBS.

5 Example of Body Paragraph
Another metaphor involves a child having “all the doors of opportunity slammed in his face.” This again powerfully illustrates that because of skin color, black children are missing out on opportunities that they might be trying for, until the doors are “slammed” on them. The doors are not only shut, or softly locked, but “slammed,” emphasizing the severity of the situation and the need for teachers to act.
