2 Ethos = Credibility Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. #1: Be a Good Person (Trustworthiness) #2: Develop Deep Expertise in Topics You Speak About (Reputation) #3: Market Yourself (Reputation) #4: Analyze Your Audience (Similarity) or Who do you trust?

3 Pathos = Emotion Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response. Highlight powerful real-life examples of that conjure emotion from the audience Appeal to the universal human experience Hunger Love Family Which emotion can help you make your argument?

4 Logos = Logic Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. Logos examples may be classified according to the following categories. Inductive reasoning – Inductive reasoning involves a specific representative fact or case which is drawn towards a conclusion or generalization. However, inductive reasoning requires reliable and powerful evidence that is presented to support the point. Deductive reasoning – Deductive reasoning involves generalization at the initial stage and then moves on towards the specific case. The starting generalization must be based on reliable evidence to support it at the end.

5 The 2nd Amendment Claim: The intent of the 2nd Amendment was to protect the gun rights of individuals. Is this statement accurate or not? You will write a 5 paragraph essay regarding this topic using ethos, pathos and logos to support your claim.

6 Essay Instructions Requirements: 5 paragraphs
Use ethos, pathos, and logos! Each body paragraph should contain at least one of the above characteristics. Address, and refute, a counter argument in one body paragraph using logos. Example; “While many have argued that it is wrong to abort and unborn child during the first trimester, the government should not, and does not, have the authority to control a woman’s body before the child has developed the characteristics of a living human being….”

7 Argumentative Essay Components
Intro: Gives context to the issue…Historical background and current debate. Has a clear thesis that corroborates or refute the claim Body Paragraphs (x3 minimum): Topic sentence with only 1 clear topic TBEAEAR Conclusion: Restate your position Make connections to historical relevance Connect to current events Call to action for the reader
