The Health Crisis Clean Water Malaria HIV/AIDS

2 Accessing Clean Water In 2002 the UN estimated that 1.2 billion people do not have access to clean or enough water WHY? Climate change has led to extreme drought and flood damage Open water sources contaminated with chemical and waste disposal Irrigation for agriculture uses the largest amount or water in the developing world Poor cannot pay for even subsidized water

3 Preventing Disease The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that improving drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene could prevent about10% of disease worldwide Cholera and Typhoid are diseases spread in unclean water One of the MDGs is to provide access to safe water

4 It Can Happen HERE! May 2000 Walkerton, Ontario experienced an E. coli outbreak The bacteria contaminated wells that supply municipal water 2000 people fell ill and several died Children and elderly the main victims

5 Malaria More than 240 million cases in 2008
At least 1 million people died most under age 5 The problem is getting worse in developing countries Poor people living in slums do not have access to health care Stagnant warm water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry the virus Worsening in Asia and South America due to forest clearing

6 How Can We Prevent Malaria?
Currently no vaccine for Malaria Only prevention of malaria carrying mosquito bites can help stop the spread of disease HOW? Insecticide treated bed nets DDT but this s a harmful chemical that is now banned Still used in Zambia Safe water planning

7 HIV/AIDS Pandemic Most serious disease issues today
Destroys the immune system Treatments are available but costly Sub Saharan Africa has been most affected by the virus Only education and access to health care can combat this pandemic 22/33 million people with HIV/AIDS live in Africa See page 411 for global stats as of 2008

9 Why is it out of control in Sub-Saharan Africa?
Limited access to education Especially for women and children Populations not educated on how it spreads Lack of safe sex contraception or refusal to use Myth vs Fact Some people have promoted myths on how it spreads and how to treat it Lack of health care Need for regular medical care to diagnose and treat it

10 How Can We Stop the Spread of HIV/AIDS
Requires the cooperation of international agencies Canada has helped to lead the establishment of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Helps countries to respond to HIV/AIDS and provided health workers to educate people to limit the spread of disease
