1 Responses to Imperialism
Quick hits from Africa, India and China

2 If you were the leader of the nation, what would you do?
A more powerful country entered your nation and tried to influence your government… tried to change some of your religious traditions… tried to steal some of your most prized natural resources… tried to redraw the map of your nation so it could be split up between other nations… tried to change your governmental system… Tried dominate your nation’s media… tried to take over your armed forces… tried to forcibly open trade with you and other nations… Well, that’s what you’d do! Let’s see what other targets of imperialism did…

3 Shaka Zulu and the Zulu Nation
Shaka Zulu, undisputed leader of the Zulu Nation, led his forces against the European colonists. Shaka dismissed firearms as ineffective against the quick encirclements of charging spearmen. Although ultimately failing against modern rifle and artillery fire in 1879, his theory achieved some success at Isandlwana.

4 The Sepoy Rebellion The sepoys were a combination of Hindu and Muslim soldiers. They had been subjected to many violations of their religious traditions such as: Traveling overseas to conduct warfare Ingesting animal fat from rifle cartridges Forced enrollment in the armed forces The sepoys raised up against the British by brutally killing British civilians (including some women and children) and soldiers. The British responded to this surprise uprising by brutally massacring tens of thousands of Indian men, women and children. Torture, rape and other brutalities also took place.

5 The Boxer Rebellion The “Righteous Harmonious Fists” were a group of Chinese nationalists who did NOT want foreign influence in China The “Fists” rose up against all foreigners in China in an effort to eradicate all foreign presence. They did not want foreigners OR Christianity in their county. A coalition force including the United States, France, Japan, Germany, Italy and Great Britain easily thwarted the “Boxers” between 1898 and 1901. China remained “open” to all of these nations despite the resistance.

6 What do all of these responses have in common?
