3 Review What are the three organs out side the body that make up the integumentary system? What are the three main parts of the nervous system? What tissue system in plants carries the phood food/sugar/sucrose from the leaves down to the roots?

4 Learning Objective I will be able to identify and describe the functions of the organs belonging to the digestive and excretory systems.

5 Language Objective Excretory and digestion system groups will present their slides. We will go through other slides in depth, and complete the FRAME, and watch a brief video on how the heart functions.

6 Guiding Questions? The excretory system filters waste from the blood and makes urine – what system works with the excretory system to filter the blood? The digestive system breaks down food physically, and then chemically into energy rich molecules that the rest of the body use as fuel – what system do you think delivers the food through the rest of the body?

7 Organ System Presentations Raise your hand if you have a question.
Conversation No talking. No whispering. Respectfully say “shh”. Help Raise your hand if you have a question. Activity Each digestive group will present their slides. I will show my slide and review key points. I will popsicle stick questions for the system Repeat with excretory system group Movement Remain seated. No bathroom breaks. Participation Sit up, pen/pencil in hand with your FRAME out. WMS Colors

8 DIGESTIVE SYSTEM PRESENT

9 Digestive System

10 Functions of the Digestive System
Ingestion = Food enters the mouth.

11 Functions of the Digestive System
Ingestion = Food enters the mouth. Digestion = Process that breaks food down into small molecules

12 Functions of the Digestive System
Ingestion = Food enters the mouth. Digestion = Process that breaks food down into small molecules Mechanical digestion = Food is chewed and churned. Chemical digestion = Breaks down large food molecules into smaller molecules to be absorbed by cells

13 Functions of the Digestive System
Ingestion = Food enters the mouth. Digestion = Process that breaks food down into small molecules Absorption = Small molecules of food are taken into the body cells.

14 Functions of the Digestive System
Ingestion = Food enters the mouth. Digestion = Process that breaks food down into small molecules Absorption = Small molecules of food are taken into the body cells. Elimination = Wastes made of unabsorbed food molecules pass out of the body. Large Intestine

15 Which is not a function of the digestive system?
Breaking down food into molecules the body can use Absorbing food molecules into the blood to deliver to the body Changing waste into molecules the body can use Eliminating undigested waste from the body

16 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Mouth = Digestion starts here. The tongue & teeth mechanically break food up.

17 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Mouth = Digestion starts here. The tongue & teeth mechanically break food up. Saliva chemically digests food. Saliva = Mostly made of water, also contains mucus and enzymes

18 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Mouth = Digestion starts here. The tongue & teeth mechanically break food up. Saliva chemically digests food. Saliva = Mostly made of water, also contains mucus and ptyalin (an enzyme) When swallowing, the epiglottis (a small flap of tissue) automatically closes over the trachea (windpipe).

19 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Esophagus Smooth muscles force food into the mucus-lined esophagus. Rhythmic muscular contractions (peristalsis) push food downward.

20 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Stomach Food undergoes mechanical digestion when stomach muscles churn the food. Chemical digestion happens when hydrochloric acid (HCl) and pepsin break down the complex proteins. Peristalsis pushes the food toward stomach’s exit.

21 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Small Intestine (6 meters long) Most digestion happens here. Intestinal juice (full of enzymes) breaks down food.

22 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Digestive Helpers Liver = Bile is produced here (Bile breaks up fats like dish detergent breaks up grease.). Gall bladder = Bile is stored here until released into the small intestine. Pancreas = Produces pancreatic juices that are released into the small intestine to break down proteins, starches, and fats

23 Where does most digestion take place?
Mouth Stomach Small intestine Liver

24 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Large Intestine (1.5 meters long) Undigested food spends 18–24 hours here, and most of the water is absorbed.

25 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Large Intestine (1.5 meters long) Undigested food spends 18–24 hours here, and most of the water is absorbed. Helpful bacteria living in the large intestine make vitamins K and B.

26 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Large Intestine (1.5 meters long) Undigested food spends 18–24 hours here, and most of the water is absorbed. Helpful bacteria living in the large intestine make vitamins K and B. Materials not absorbed form into solid waste (dead bacteria, some fat and protein, undigested food, dried out parts of digestive juices, and old intestinal cells).

27 Organs of the Digestive Tract
Large Intestine (1.5 meters long) Undigested food spends 18–24 hours here, and most of the water is absorbed. Helpful bacteria living in the large intestine make vitamins K and B. Materials not absorbed form into solid waste (dead bacteria, some fat & protein, undigested food, dried out parts of digestive juices, and old intestinal cells). Solid waste passes into the rectum and is stored until it is eliminated from the body through the anus.

28 The Digestive System Purpose: to breakdown food to provide energy and nutrients * mechanical and chemical digestion Major Organs and their Functions: Mouth – to chew and grind up food – includes salivary glands, tongue, teeth Esophagus – pipe connecting mouth to stomach Stomach – secretes strong acid (pH = 2) that leads to breakdown of food Small Intestine – where broken down food is absorbed into the bloodstream Large Intestine – removes water from the liquid waste and gets the waste ready for excretion Liver – produces bile, which breaks down fats in foods Gallbladder – pouch-like organ that stores bile Pancreas – produces the hormone insulin that regulates blood sugar levels

29 The Digestive System

30 EXCRETORY SYSTEM PRESENT

31 Excretory System

32 Excretory System Why do our bodies need to filter waste from the body?
Maintain homeostasis Removal of harmful materials Removal of excess fluids, chemicals, minerals, vitamins, salts, and other wastes from the blood

33 Organs of the Excretory System
Kidneys = filter blood that has collected wastes from cells

34 Organs of the Excretory System
Ureters = tubes that lead from each kidney to bladder

35 Organs of the Excretory System
Urinary bladder = muscular organ that holds urine

36 Organs of the Excretory System
Urethra = tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body

37 Where is urine stored until the body is ready to eliminate it?
Kidneys Ureters Bladder Urethra

38 Functions of Excretory System
Rids blood of wastes (urea) Controls blood volume by removing extra water produced by cells Balances salts and water so cells can function properly

39 Which is not a function of the excretory system?
Removes wastes from the blood Removes excess water from the blood Removes carbon dioxide from the blood Removes excess salt from the blood

40 Purpose: removal of body waste
The Excretory System Purpose: removal of body waste Major Organs and Their Functions Kidneys – the main organs of the excretory system -- blood full of waste enters the kidney and the kidney filters out urea, excess water, and other waste products, which eventually travel out of the kidney as urine Urinary Bladder – the body’s urine storage tank
