Introduction Food provides essential chemicals called nutrients
Nutrients play a vital role in your ablilty to enjoy life and reach your full potential They give you energy They are needed for growth, maintenance and repair of the body They keep different body systems working smoothly

Nutrient Teamwork More than 40 nutrients have been identified so far
Each nutrient plays a special role in maintaining health Nutrients can not be substituted or meet all your needs Nutrients work together to contribute to good health

Nutrient Teamwork Some nutrients are major players while others are more minor Nutrients are divided into 6 major types Carbohydrates Fats Proteins Vitamins Minerals Dietary fiber

Nutrients You Need Carbohydrates-main source of your body energy
Fats-concentrated source of energy which also transport some fat-soluble vitamins Proteins-build and repair the body as well as provide energy

Nutrients You Need Vitamins-chemicals needed in small amounts to help the body function properly; help other nutrients do their job Minerals-help the body work properly; many become part of body tissues such as bone Dietary Fiber-a mixture of plant materials that are not broken down indigestion; needed for good health
