Where were we and where are we going?
LAST UNIT: Layers of the Atmosphere THIS UNIT: Water Cycle We finished our unit on the layers of the atmosphere We talked about how temperature, pressure, and density change in the atmosphere Now we are going to discuss how this atmosphere contributes to our weather To do that we are going to start by investigating the water cycle
2
STOP AND JOT HOW DO WE GET WATER IN LAKES
STOP AND JOT HOW DO WE GET WATER IN LAKES? HOW DOES WATER GET INTO CLOUDS FOR RAIN?
3
THE WATER (H2O) CYCLE A – Evaporation C - Precipitation
B – Condensation D – Run Off
4
LET’S SING!!! REPEAT ALONG WITH THE VIDEO!
5
What is The Sun role? THE SUN’S ENERGY IS NECESSARY TO POWER THE WATER CYCLE.
6
The Water Cycle
7
What is Evaporation? THE SUN WARMS THE WATER IN THE OCEAN, CAUSING IT TO CHANGE FROM WATER (LIQUID) TO WATER VAPOR (GAS).
8
The Water Cycle
9
How else does water get into the atmosphere?
WATER ENTERS THE ATMOSPHERE FROM PLANTS THROUGH A PROCESS CALLED TRANSPIRATION! It is just evaporation from plant leaves!
10
The Water Cycle
11
What is Condensation? ONCE THE WARM GAS HITS THE COOLER AIR IT CHANGES BACK INTO A LIQUID AND FORMS A CLOUD.
12
How do you make rain?? TINY WATER MOLECULES BOUNCE AROUND IN THE CLOUD. AS THEY HIT EACH OTHER, THEY STICK TOGETHER AND BECOME LARGER DROPLETS.
13
The Water Cycle
14
What is Precipitation? ONCE THEY BECOME SO HEAVY, THE CLOUD CAN NO LONGER HOLD THEM. IT BEGINS TO PRECIPITATE.
15
Precipitation can be: RAIN SNOW SLEET HAIL
16
The Water Cycle
17
What is Runoff? WATER THAT COLLECTS IN RIVERS, STREAMS, AND OCEANS IS CALLED RUNOFF.
18
What is Groundwater? WHEN RAIN FALLS ON LAND, SOME OF THE WATER IS ABSORBED INTO THE GROUND FORMING POCKETS OF WATER CALLED GROUNDWATER. MOST GROUNDWATER EVENTUALLY RETURNS TO THE OCEAN.
19
Why is it called a cycle? THEN WHAT? RIGHT! IT STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN! THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED A CYCLE.
21
Water Cycle Comic Strip Expectations
You will be given a sheet with five boxes on it. Please go ahead and label each box with the following: Evaporation Precipitation Condensation Runoff Radiation Now, read your directions sheet and let me know if you have any questions. We will be working on this during classwork time for the next few days.
