Chemical and Physical Changes
How can matter be changed? How are mass and weight different? Why does the mas of an object remain the same regardless of its location? How can I tell if matter has undergone a chemical or a physical change? How do different forms of water exist on Earth? How can matter change by just looking at it?
2
Matter Mass Volume Weight The amount of matter in an object
Anything that has mass and takes up space. The physical properties of matter are size, shape, texture, odor, and state. Matter can be observed in three different states: gas, liquid, or solid. Mass The amount of matter in an object Volume The amount of space that matter takes up. Weight The measure of the pull of gravity on an object
3
The further away an object is from the center of Earth (gravitational pull) the less the object will weigh. However, the mass of an object does not depend on the gravitational pull.
4
Physical Properties Any sample of matter can be described by its physical properties: color, shape, texture, luster, and density Density describes how much matter is in a given space, or volume. The density of a substance determines whether it will float or sink in water.
5
Chemical Properties Is a characteristic of matter that can be observed only when matter is changed into a new kind of matter such as burning, rusting or tarnishing, exploding, or changing of color. Chemical Properties refers to how matter reacts with air, water or heat.
6
Other Physical Changes are cutting, folding and tearing.
A Mixture is matter made up of two or more substances that are combined physical, but can be separated. A solution is a mixture in which the particles of the parts are mixed thoroughly and evenly. A solution has the same properties throughout. Other Physical Changes are cutting, folding and tearing.
7
Chemical Changes A chemical change is a change in matter that produces new kinds of matter with different properties.
