1 Can’t I just use a pie chart for everything?
Types of Graphs Can’t I just use a pie chart for everything?

2 NO! There are many different types of graphs and they are all used to show data in a different way. DON’T just use a circle graph for everything. Let’s explore a few of the different types of graphs…

3 Plotted Points that show a relationship between data
Scatter Plots Plotted Points that show a relationship between data

4 Scatter Plots - Find a Trend
Collection of points that have one value determining position on x-axis and a second value determining position on y-axis. (plotting a point) EX: # of hours studying : grades # of tumblers sold : $ raised # of iTunes downloads : ranking on the charts

5 Displays how data changes over a period of time
Line Graph Displays how data changes over a period of time

6 Line Graph – What happens over time?
Uses points and line(s) to show how the data changes over a certain period of time. You set the scale. - Population changes in Fleming Island/Green Cove Springs over last few years - Cost of smart phones since they came out - Your height since you were a baby

7 Compare parts of a whole
Circle Graph Compare parts of a whole

8 Circle Graphs – Think in %’s!
What is the whole? What are the parts? What percentage does each part have of the whole? Favorite lunch item Music Preferences Budgets

9 Shows the relative size of things
Bar Graph Shows the relative size of things

10 Double Bar Graph Compare the size of two situations/variables
Before and After Boys vs. Girls You can really compare and present more than one type of information using a double bar graph.

11 Bar Graphs – Compare Categories
Comparing quantities in different categories in both regular and double bar graphs Amount of sugar in foods Amount of students in clubs Amount of electricity use

12 Similar to bar graphs, but groups numbers into RANGES
Histogram Similar to bar graphs, but groups numbers into RANGES

13 Histograms – show results of continuous data
Age ranges, weight, times, heights, etc…

14 Which graph fits your data?
