1 Do Now: Are robots alive? Why or why not?
Aim: How do we know the difference between living and nonliving things? Do Now: Are robots alive? Why or why not? Asimo - Honda's robot

2 CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE
Cells: The basic units that all living things are made up of. Sometimes they may only have one. Metabolism: All the chemical reactions in a cell Homeostasis: Ability of the body to stay in a normal/steady condition, no matter what the environment is outside Reproduction: Producing offspring

3 Example of how our body maintains homeostasis:
Our bodies stay at 98 degrees, even if it is very hot or cold outside

4 All Living Things Are Made Up of One or More Cells

5 Eight Life Processes Nutrition Transport Cell Respiration Excretion
Synthesis Regulation Growth Reproduction

6 NUTRITION Getting nutrients through food
a. Autotrophs: organisms that make their own food Ex: Plants making their own food using energy from the sun b. Heterotrophs: organisms that get nutrients from the environment Ex: Eating a sandwich to get protein, sugars, and fats

7 Transport circulating (moving) materials in and out of cells, and between cells Ex: food and waste

8 Cell Respiration Chemical process that produces the kind of energy
that cells need to be able to work.

9 Excretion Getting rid of Metabolic (cell) waste

10 SYNTHESIS To make or to build from small to large.
Ex: Using nutrients you get from food to build parts of the cell

11 REGULATION To control Ex: the brain controls your entire body!

12 GROWTH Increasing the size or number of cells
Ex: babies create a lot of new cells to get bigger

13 REPRODUCTION To have offspring (babies or more cells)
Ex: cells dividing into new cells or an animal having a baby

15 A mission to Mars has found a specimen and brought it back to Earth
A mission to Mars has found a specimen and brought it back to Earth. As a biologist, your job is to figure out if the following specimens is living or non living. Explain how you will determine whether it is living or non living. (use complete sentences)
