Narrator 5: Without delay, the little kitchen girl lead the proud courtiers and the nightingale on their journey from the shore of the deep blue sea, through the green forest, past the flowery garden bog, to the Emperor’s porcelain palace.
Narrator 6: And when they arrived, the palace was glittering with the light of ten thousand gold lanterns. The nightingale was given a special seat of honor atop a golden perch in plain view of the esteemed guests and their noble Emperor.
All: In China, we’re glad for the things that we’ve had, and in China our pride comes from dep down inside.

3. All: So on this very special night, we light the golden lanterns bright.
And all the palace bells will ring for the nightingale will sing.
In China we shine with emotion divine, every girl, every boy has a feeling of joy.

Narrator 1: And when the Emperor was ready, he graciously bowed his head to the nightingale as a signal for her to begin.

Narrator 2: The nightingale’s song melted the hearts of all the guests.
And when the Emperor raised his royal head, his eyes were filled with tears of joy.

Emperor: I thank you for singing your song to me.

6. Dialogue 5 Emperor: I have never heard such beautiful sounds!
Citizen 5: What a charming voice!
Citizen 6: That’s the prettiest thing I have ever heard.
Citizen 7: Such a splendid gift!
Citizen 8: I must learn to sing like this nightingale!
Emperor: How can I ever repay you?
Narrator 3: The Emperor tried to reward the bird.
Emperor: I am so moved by your lovely music, that I wish to give you a special gift. Will you wear this golden slipper around your neck?
Narrator 4: The nightingale graciously declined.
Nightingale: No, thank you Emperor.

7. Emperor: Perhaps you will accept my jeweled ring as a token of gratitude?
Nightingale: No, thank you.
Emperor: How then shall I honor you for bringing such joy to my heart?
Nightingale: I see tears in your eyes, Emperor. I could wish for nothing more.
Chief of Staff: All hail the wondrous nightingale!

8. Beautiful Underscore
Narrator 1: From that moment of, the nightingale was commanded to stay in the imperial palace.
Narrator 2: She was kept upon the golden perch at the left side of the Emperor’s throne, so that she would be nearest to his heart.
Narrator 3: The nightingale was given the liberty to go out twice by day and once by night, but only when escorted by the courtiers, who held silken ribbons tied to her legs.
Narrator 4: The whole city spoke of the wonderful bird and when two people met, one would say “Nightin” and the other replied “gale”.
Narrator 5: Important ladies poured water into their mouths and trilled, hoping to sound like the nightingale.
Narrator 6: Eleven grocer’s children were named after the bird, but not one of them could sing a note.

9. Narrator 1: Truly, the nightingale was a resounding success.
Narrator 2: One day, a great package arrived for the Emperor. It was delivered to him by the little girl from the kitchen who had been promoted to the position of imperial package-bringer as a reward for finding the nightingale.
